Offset command

Greetings! I wonder, what does it mean when I try to offset an object and the command bar says "cannot offset that object"? Am I forgetting a step?

Not all objects (since you did not mention what object you are referring to) can offset. Some examples are 3d solids and blocks. Lines can offset but if its part of a block, you can't offset it, unless you are ref-editing the block.
