Default Symbolic Lines Not Showing Up

I am trying to draw a duplex so that in elevation it looks like a duplex. So I draw the receptacles in plan view using the symbolic lines command. When I insert the correct symbol appears in plan view but when I look at a section/elevation the receptacles do not show up, it still looks like a box. What are the possibilities of why the symbolic lines are not showing up?

    Thanks.

Symbolic lines will only show up in the view that you place it in, You said that you drew the symbol on the plan view, therfore it will not show up in section/elevation. The best way for your receptacle to show in section is to model the receptacle. your section/elevation is only showing a box because that is what you probably modeled.

Yes but the "plan view" for a vertical element like a duplex is the elevation view.

Yes, that is true for the Model part of the family, but for the Annotation part that is not true. If you put your annotation on the plan in the family it will show up on the plan view in the project. If you put the annotation on the front elevation it will most likly show in the section/elevation.

My annotation shows up correctly. This detail I am trying to add now is so in elevation you can see the difference between a receptacle, a data outlet and so on, instead of all being boxes.

Take a look at the image below. This is from a book I bought. I am trying to avoid the top picture (what I have now) to get the bottom picture (what I want). They say in the book to use symbolic lines, but they are not showing up. Actually I do not even see the top picture, I see solid black boxes (perhaps my lines are too thick?)

I got it. I had to not display the junction box and cover plate in the elevation view where I want the symbolic lines to show. I still have the face plate and junction box showing up in the section. For the elevation I just added symbolic lines to the outline of the faceplate so it looks right.
