Project regenerating all views with any action

Since about a week ago the project we're working on, which up until this time had been performing fairly flawlessly, started really lagging when doing most mundane tasks. I've audited, compacted and purged it but the slowness persists. It seems as if whenever we do anything I see in the bottom left status bar that it's generating views for elements that I'm not even manipulating at the time. Has anyone run across something similar? How can I stop this?

By default Revit will automatically regenerate ALL open views to keep everything current and in sync. Does the same notification come up if you only have one view open?

Maybe we just have too many views open at a time, but I don't think that behavior's changed from when this started happening. I can actually pinpoint the slowdown to when we bound a linked file into our current project.

Anyway, you say "by default" can this default regeneration of all open views be switched off?
