Default Placing pipe with shared elevation rather than offset elevation

When doing the type of design I do most of the time pipe elevation relative to the floor is meaningless. I changed the building levels to reflect actual surveyed elevations, but when placing pipe Revit still requires me to place it relative to the particular floor I am working on. Because most of my piping is critical to other elevations other than the floor I never really think relative to the floor elevation. I consider it, but I don't necessarily design around it. This cause me to constantly figure the offset on scratch paper whenever I place pipe. It would be nice if I could place pipe at 1456.83' regardless of how much that is offset from the floor.

    Is this possible?

you could create a new level at your "0'-0" and call it base or something like that, then when placing pipe use that level as your reference level under the element properties (see attached). That way you can set the offset to your values w/o the scratch paper.

or, set your new level to 1400' which would make your elevation easier to come up w/ and wouldn't create a level so far below your model.....that is, unless your building is actually 1456ft tall.

Modeling mech pipe using Revit MEP 2012 for one of our subs who doesn't have any 3d capability. Level 1 elevation tags worked out great but the levels 2 & 3 are referencing level 1 for the elevation call-out. The pipes on those levels are associated to the correct level and when selecting the pipes in that file their properties show correct (they ref the level they're part of). How do I correct this?
