    Default Border on Layer Zero

    Teachers-

I always tell the students to create or INSERT the title block and border into layer zero, since that's what we've always done. Why do we do that? Does industry do that too?

I asked this question some time ago on another forum, I think. Nobody had an answer. Several mentioned attributes, but I want to know about layers. Does industry tend to place the title block and border on Layer zero or on a new layer like "Title Block and Border"?

IF the title block is to contain its own unique
NESTED layers then define it that way.
Otherwise Layer zero is the preferred layer to define
most all blocks on. Unless those blocks need to
    contain unique layer definitions.

I believe AIA standard has defined layers for title block entities

Once upon a time it was common to insert the border as a block - so it was reasonable to create the border on layer zero. These days the border is more commonly part of the template file so, in my opinion anyway, none of it should be on layer zero but on a "border" layer.

    Hi,

I work for an electrical consulting firm and we receive the drawings from the architects office. The title blocks come in all kinds of different configurations. Some all on layer 0, some with diiferent layers for the linework and text, and some with a specific layer for title block with attributes. So I don't think there is an industry standard, just what your office policy is. Our office policy is to put the title block on layer 0. It's there so it may as well be used for something.

I like to create blocks on layer zero, but I insert them into my drawing on a specific layer. In the drawing itself I like to keep layer zero clean so that if god forbid I have to explode a block I can easily find the pieces.

For what it's worth, we crete our title blocks on layers "Borderline" and "Borgertext" and insert them on layer "Border"

I believe AIA standard is _-ANNO-TTLB for title blocks with whichever discipline code is appropriate. I personally don't use the standard because I can't get my company to change but we do have a seperate subsection of our notes layers for the title block.

Seeing as we turn off layer 0 here when final plotting, we put the border on it's own _XREF-BORDER layer...that way, we don't accidentally turn off the border (which has happened in the past....).

As we ramp up the conversion to ADT 2005, we currently Xref the titleblock.dwg into the _-XREF layer. As a multi-discipline firm, the titleblock.dwg layers will be changed to G-Anno-_____ for universal use, since we will ultimately have ONE titleblock to update across the project.
