can the distance from the arrow to the dimension be set
i would like to move the text closer to the arrow

go to your dimension style and modify the DIMGAP this is on the TEXT tab

now that I re-read your post are you trying to NOT center the text?
in such case you may have to select manual placement of text items
or position them after the fact. If the Horizonatal placement options on the
TEXT tab in dimstyle dialog do not meet your needs.

Change variable `dimtmove' to 2,and move the text using `dimted' command
