Default 2 Screens revert to one

I have a two screen setup. To maximize my work screen, I moved the properties and browser windows to the secondary screen. After several load/save cycles, it reverts to one screen. I drag them back to #2, it works for a while, then back to one screen again.

What don't I know about windows here?

[at least it doesn't straddle the windows, like Excel does!]

Probably a display/graphics card setup issue.

Whatever the problem is I wish they would fix Revit so that you could really utilize several screens. I have suggested, for years, that we be able to drag Views onto other screens, leaving you main screen as the central works space with Browser and Properties, but have other views on different screens to reference. This would really make a difference in productivity.

Question Re: 2 Screens revert to one

Is the project also being opened on a separate, single display machine?

    Never thought of that!

The answer is yes. Most of us have two screens, but not everyone. Could it be that if the one-eyed user saves last at night, and a two-eyed user opens first in the morning, the two-eyed Revit reverts to one?

That would indicate that the setting is carried inside the file somewhere. That's easier to fix than trying to manage the infinite multitude of hardware setups that Revit users have.

I did a test. I opened a file. The props/browse windows were on screen 2. I moved them to one screen and STC. I then exited completely. I restarted Revit and loaded the file. It came in one screen. I restored the 2 screen setup and saved, closed and reopened. It came in on 2 screens.

I was able to repeat this cycle. Looks like the screen setup is a sticky bit that remembers how it was last saved, regardless of the screen setup it's loaded into.

Not a bug, but also, not as expected. There should be a way Revit queries the hardware at load time and takes action accordingly.

Interestingly, the one-eyed Revit user in my office never complained about the props/browse screen not being in the right location (for her). Somehow, when a 2 screen file is loaded into a one screen workstation, it knows to revert to the props/browse "stack" on the left hand side. Must be a built-in default.

Put enhanced 2 screen support on the list for 2014. Maybe by then we'll all have OLED screens. Think of the fine print Adesk can squeeze into the user agreement on one of those!!!!!
