Default Temporary or Permanent Dimensions on Doors not working

As I'm putting together the model I noticed that the temporary dimensions aren't working with my door family. I also noticed that when I put in a permanent dimension to the inside of the door to the nearest wall and then click on the door to activate the dimension that it doesn't work (as I've shown in the jpg attached). I switched my custom door out for the Autodesk door and that worked fine. I opened the Autodesk door to try to troubleshoot the difference and couldn't find anything obvious. Anyone know what could be wrong?

your door family probably doesn't have ref. planes that are set to ref., ie, left/right, or strong reference.
