Default View Properties

Is anyone aware of how to, (or if it is possible to), modify the default settings for different view types? As an example, lets say I would like to change the default properties of detail section views so that a new view of this type would be set to have Annotation Crop unchecked, and Display Model set to "Half-tone".

Currently I use view templates for this, but there must be a way to modify defaults right?
