Default Arrayed object with varying sizes?

How does one create an arrayed object in a family where each consecutive object needs to change size? I'm thinking of a triangular-shaped gable louver family, which would have an arrayed nested family for the louver blade, but since the shape is triangular, each successive blade higher up would need to be a little shorter than the one below. I know there's a way to do it. Any ideas?

I have not tried this to verify, but I imagine that you could model the array such that it is at least as wide as the widest louver blade, and then use void extrusions to cut away the excess parts. I believe that all items in an array have to be identical.
