    Default NavisWorks opening slow

I have recently run into problems where NavisWorks has slowed down on opening. In the past it used to open pretty quickly and only slow down if it needed to create a new .nwc file for a referenced file.

Now it appears that it is creating new .nwc files for all files on open which is really slowing down the opening of files. It really struggles when it gets to the larger structural steel files. Does anyone know of a setting that I may have changed that is causing this problem?

    Thanks,

Yea, and sometines (for no apparent reason) when refreshing one small dwg file Navis will re-cache some or all of the dwg files every time you hit F5 to refresh.
It doesn't do it all the time, perhaps 60% of the time it does. It drives me nuts to see it convert the dwg files again, wasting time.

    Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Make sure that the NWC Read Cache is turned on:
    Tools>Global Options>Model>NWC

If the Read Cache box is not checked, then all files are converted on open regardless of available NWC files.

The "convert XREF" and "merge layers" settings probably have some impact on this as well.

Navis will load the DWG file if it is newer than the NWC file.

You should get in the habit of saving your DWG file, then writing your NWC file, then exiting Autocad without saving again.

My Read and Write Cache are both checked.

What's weird is that it doesn't do it consistently in any way that I can follow and why it's happening. Once it starts it will re-cache the same files every time you re-fresh (one file) for that session (at least).

    Thanks,

We are having this same problem, I started a thread about it earlier today. NW only reads the cache files for me properly when nobody else is accessing the model. When others are using it all the dwgs get translated for every refresh.... killing me

I was having similar problems today after "tweaking" the settings trying to see if I couldn't get the files to load faster. Unfortunately, messing with the settings didn't enhance the speed, it made it worse. The way I fixed it was to set all settings to default, then reloaded each individual file again. 4 floors of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Sheet Metal, Structural, and the Model itself. It took some time but now, when I hit refresh, it doesn't cache each individual file again and again. I'll just make sure I don't "tweak" the settings anymore, thinking I'm going to speed things up.

One way around that is to have your users open the models through a batch file that will copy the network version of the model to thier desktops before opening it. I know there are switches that 'release' the files but, I've had a lot more luck having them use batch files. That way they're not going all over the network looking for files and fat fingering them once they find them. It'll save you many hours of work..
Give a man AutoCad, and he'll draw you a floor plan.
Give a man Revit and he'll build you a house.
Give Cadmama a couple of drinks and she'll have everyone singing Rockytop!
