Default Table Breaks & Text Format with Data Link

I am taking advantage of some brief slack time to master the infuriating process of data linking a table to an Excel file (MS Office/Excel 2010), to create a load table for an anchor bolt plan. We make many of these drawings and would like to test the advantage of linking to a spreadsheet instead of copy-n-paste into the drawing. Establishing the link and creating the table has not been difficult, but formatting has been . . . trying.
After futching about and getting the text formatted, cell heights and column widths acceptable, the table is too long to fit the drawing border we are using and the table must be "broken." This is accomplished with no difficulty, either, and the table fits nicely on the border. Lock the contents and format and save. When reopened, the lower, or broken, portion of the table has lost its formatting- text heights and styles are mixed, resulting in a new break section created to the right, which now spans off the drawing border to the right. The original "top"section of the table is unchanged; it's the "lower" sections below the break which go nutso somewhere between save, close and open.
I re-format and resize as required, lock it all, save again, and re-open to find it all mucked up once more. The old CnP method is looking better all the time. Anyone got any idea what's going on?
