    Default extrusions

Is there a way to make two extrusions touch without a line? Giving an allusion of a single object. Or is there a way to creat an extrusion that can has varying widths?

try using swept blend for your family, this will allow you to use different profile on each end.

Will swept blend let you use 3 profiles?

i need the object to remain constant width for a distance and then go to another width and continue on.

No, only start and end profile for swept blend, but you can chain additional swept blends together in your family.
I have used this for metal building frame with different depths.

Can you post a sketch of what you're trying to create? It's easier to suggest the appropriate method if we know what the end result wants to look like.

Sweep blend basically blends two different shapes together over the extrusion (A sweep with a profile at each end)

Im not 100% sure what you are trying to achieve, but I assume the two extrusions are a model-in-place component?
You can create your extrusions (in seperate model-in-place components) and join geometry. Make sure the material types match
