Default Building Elevations Revit MEP 2012

When in an elevation view, what settings should be used so that only the exterior surface of the building is visible and not components within the building?

What you are seeing, "components withing the building" are the MEP objects, whether you placed or the architect placed them. This viewing is hardcoded in the program when views are listed in the browser under Mechanical or Electrical. To get the view you want, change the properties of the View and put it in either Coordination or Architecture.
No matter how much you adjust your View Range,
if you have to wear glasses, you will still need to wear glasses.

click the arrow head of the elevation symbol, and the outline of the view range will show up, drag your depth in to where it's in the middle of the wall you're looking at (as long as the wall is flat). if you have bends or depth changes it might get tricky.
