I notice a Vault shortcut on my desktop. does this mean I have the Vault? that I can install to server and start managing data? or is it just a client and I still need to by some other software?

If I understand when you attempt to install vault you will be redirected to download the install software.
Also, I wouldn't bother as a current client is reporting that there are GIANT Hairy spiders all over the current
version of the Vault Plugin for C3D 2012.
