Question Revit Keynoting - Numbering System

I have 5 years experience and a strong understanding of Revit’s Keynoting tool. I am now at a new firm and assisting them with implementing keynoting. Currently they are using generic annotations / note blocks to apply sheet/keyed notes.

In my past experience, I have used the “By Keynote” numbering method, with the first character relating to the spec section, and the second being the unique identifier, which is random, based on the order in which they were created.
“Instruction” notes such as, “Align” would fall under Division 1 – notes numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on.
Demolition notes would fall under Division 2. To me, this system makes a lot of sense as there is a logical grouping of elements, one numbering system can be used throughout the entire project, yet it is simpler than using a system based on the entire CSI Masterformat, such as the sample file included with Revit. Below is a shortened version of what a typical keynote txt file under this system would look like.

My question is – what other keynote numbering/grouping systems are people using out there? Any thoughts on tweaking the method I’ve described? I have heard of firms grouping their keynotes by Floor Plans, Reflected Ceiling Plans, Elevations, etc. What I do not like about a system such as that is what happens when you want to keynote the same element on a floor plan, as well as an elevation or section. I would prefer to stick with the By Keynote numbering system, as opposed to “By Sheet,” but am open to all suggestions.

I've actually gone with letter and number designators since a lot of my note describe systems.
BW1 - 18" thick basement wall reinforced with #6@12"oc each way each face
FNDW1 - 18" thick foundation steam well reinf........
    SW1 - 12" thick shear wall reinf.......
SCS1 - structural composite slab - 2"-20ga galv comp steel deck with 4 1/2" nw conc topping (6 1/2" total thickness) reinf w/ 6x6-W2.1xW2.1 WWR
    EPAD1 - 3 1/2" equipment pad - see 5/s-501 for detail.
    IPAD1 - 12" thick isolated equipment pad - see 6/s-501
    sog1 - 6" thick slab on grade reinf w/ xxxxxxx - see x/xxx
So I kind of went with a what you call it method for labeling keynotes.
Not sure it's the best way, but I'm not going with full specs number. All keynotes are user based and not tied (currently) to any family.

I like your system. The only comment I have is that I try to use Type Mark tags whenever possible. For example, you use keynotes for your bathroom equipment, but for that, I would use an equipment tag and then create a bathroom accessory schedule that would list the items, mfr, model, comments, etc. The same is true for other items such as tackboards, markerboards, etc. I like the added functionality of having type marks and schedules where applicable. Another item where this has been useful is for window roller shades, blinds, and drapes.

My firm tends to follow the NCS keynote number is the full specification number pluse it's modifier(08 7000.A). These notes are basically Reference or material notes, and do not describe how to do anything such as "align". For descriptive note we use NCS's sheet keynotes which are numbered 1,2,3 etc. For the sheet keynotes we have developed three ways of doing this the first is to have a separate note block that can be scheduled. I've described this in my blog check it out. http://revittize.blogspot.com/2008/0...revistied.html

The second is putting all descriptive keynotes in specification sections that are in division 1 such as demolition.
The third is something my firm is currently testing where the discriptive notes are still with in the keynote file and numbered 1,2,3 but the keynote legend is filtered to seperate the sheet keynotes from the referance keynotes
