    For starters, try typing

    PLAN
    [enter]
    [enter]
    John B

Are you working in the world coordinate system (WCS) or a user defined coordinate system, like a rotated view?
If Jaberwok's idea doesn't help, try
    UCS
    W
    [enter]
    PLAN
    [enter]
    [enter]
That will atleast get you to World Coordinate System and looking at it correctly..

I had to use a mixture of the flatten command because I had drawn on the funny UCS and then I also had to make new view port with the restore option so it fetch the right settings. This is once I put it back into 2 dimensions. It was a work around not a fix. I have yet to find a fix
