    Default Pipe Labels

Is there a way to add a sting of text onto a pipe we typically label our hydronic piping depending on the type of pipe it is. Ex. Hot Water Supply = HWS and Hot Water Return = HWR. I think there is a way just not sure how to go about it and new to Revit so im struggling.

    Thanks in advance!

I think there are a couple options here. When I first started messing with this I setup a duplicate pipe tag for each pipe type I wanted to identify, and used a different suffix. It looked fine, but was still manual. There was just one pipe type, and I had to select the proper tag for each pipe. Never quite had the time to set it up better.

On a more recent job I setup a family to read in the Type Comments field of each pipe. I made a bunch of duplicate pipe types, so I could set the Type Comments for each individually. It took a bit to setup, but was great after that, since everything worked automatically. I've attached a copy. It looks like I also added another optional suffix for some common abbreviations we use like FFB/TFA (From Floor Below / To Floor Above).

I think the newer versions make pipe types a bit easier, but I haven't had a chance to play with them much yet.

The way I did it is this: I created a dummy file with all the different pipe types in it. In each of the pipe Type Mark properties i put a suffix, CWR for Chilled Water Return, DHW for Domestic How Water, etc etc. That way when a new project was started I could Transfer Project Standards from the dummy file and transfer the pipe types and the type mark properties also transfers.

Then I created 1 pipe tag Family. In the Family there are 4 different pipe tag Types. One is Pipe Size, one is Type, one is Size and Type, and the last is Size, Type, and Fixture Units. Then I have 4 different labels on top of each other. The corresponding pipe parameters are added to the tag, Size, Type, Type Mark, Fixture Units, in whatever order you choose. They are the same as the tag Types I mentioned. I then control the visibility of the labels with Yes/No parameters that will turn off all the labels except one. In the project I now have one Pipe Tag Family, and four pipe tag Types. Now when I tag a pipe, I can load 1 tag family, and switch between the four types within the family.

The only problem I had with it is adding leaders, sometimes they are spaced too far from the text. not sure what is making it do that, but hopefully will fix it soon.

We tag the pipes based on the piping system they are assigned. So in the properties of my piping system the system name for Domestic Hot Water is DHW. Then when the pipe is tagged by system, it has DHW where ever the tag is placed on a pipe in that system. The piping tag we use has several options including: size, fixture units, system, and comments (just incase of something special) and several combinations of those.

I second the pipe tag by system piping system. It works great since 2012. If you run into a need to fake anything in, create an oblique text type that you can fake in over the pipe.

There is also a "System Abbreviation" that can be set for each pipe type. We use that parameter in our tag to read the abbreviation of the system.
