Parametric Detail family (how does this work)

i have been using just lines to make a similar tree, then found this (i use 3 lines, this uses 2) it works perfectly, scales parametricly, but i don't see how, theres no dimensions or locks. I wanted to add a 3rd line, so i did so and it didn't scale.

Can someone explain it to me?

If you check the visibility/graphics settings, you'll see that all annotation info (ref lines and dims) are turned off. Simply turn them on and you'll see all the parameters.
