Revit Build numbers

How important are build numbers? I am sending RVT files from my machine to an office in another city. My build is 20110309_2315(x64) and his build is 20110916_2132 R2.

Things that work on my machine aren't working on his. Could this be part of the problem?

Absolutely. All machines that are used on the same project must be on the same build. This is a documented fact.

Is that true? I have not seen that before. Version, yes....build, no (not saying that's not right, just that I haven't read about that before).

We have a mix of 32 and 64 bit machines. Is it possible to coordinate the same build number across them?

I imagine this requirement is for networked machines working together on a single project. If I save a file and send it to a consultant as a link, will the build matter? (as long as it's R2012) If it does, we have so many consultants on multiple projects, I don't think we could ever coordinate them all.

You CAN mix 32 bit and 64 bit machines, but be careful if the file size gets over 200MB. The 64 bit machines, which can have more than 4GB of RAM, will be able to open/save--but the 32 bit machines may not.

Best solution is same version, same build, same updates, same OS, same hardware (or equivalent hardware specs.)

ABSOLUTELY it matters. You have the original version of Revit 2012. Your colleague has the latest updated version (Service Pack 2) of Revit 2012. We ran into an issue recently where 2 people in the office were working on site grading plans, and neither user could place a spot elevation on a linked toposurface and have it show the correct elevation. It wanted to show just 1.00 across the whole thing. My machine worked correctly. I found that I had not updated their Revit installations with SP2. As soon as I did that, their spot elevations worked just fine.

I am running into odd behavior with Revit sitework. I checked the subscription site and discovered I was 2 upgrades behind.

This happened because most of the last year was spent on 2011 to maintain compatibility with our joint venture. I'm just starting a new job in 2012. Guess where a project starts: site analysis!
