Layers not locking

I'm noticing that even when layers are locked or turned off, I'm still able to select them.
Also, when I'm working in Paperspace and I happen to left-click on the mouse, the drawing
sometimes automatically switches to Modelspace. Please help as it is very annoying.
I'm working on AutoCAD 2002 in WinXP Professional 32-bit

That's just it. I'm not selecting them. Whenever I click on the drawing to select other layers,
even the layers that I froze or turned off STILL are among the layers selected. I have no
control over it.

You may have double-clicked the viewport or you have a defective mouse.
About the objects being selected, its normal. You can still select objects in a locked layer to permit operations such as TRIM (used as a cutting edge) but operations modifying that object are prohibited. On objects being selected while you are not selecting it, it might be part of a GROUP. Turn grouping off (Ctrl+Shift+A) and see if they are still being selected.

Locking the layer doesn't prevent objects from being selected turning a layer usually does. When selecting an object on an off layer is it part of a block or xref?

Hi. When I'm working in paperspace, there are several viewports that are turned off as I'm working on the drawing, yet when I'm using ZOOM Window, etc. and have to size the window area, that action somehow selects the viewports--which are turned off by the way--and the drawing is suddenly in modelspace. This only just started occurring and it's driving me crazy. Sometimes it happens and other times it doesn't. Although it occurs more times than not of late.
