Default Family Offset from Wall Problem...

    -The Problem

I have a family that is a rod off the wall that can extend. On the end of this rod is an emittor that you can angle up/down and right/left. For some reason, and it would seem to be a hard coded thing, it wants to attach to the wall, but it is offset from the wall automatically. As if it was attaching to an invisible wall feet way form the actual wall. No Parameter I made is directly controlling it. Has anyone had a similar problem???

    -How it was built...

Can't upload the file because there seems to be an error... I tried a few other things and no dice...

I have a family nested into a family. At his point in the nest it is just 3d content. Then I nest the family into a family so I can control the left/right rotation of the emitter. Then I have the final family that will go into the project. All were created using a generic face based template. In the final family I have the pole off the wall and an offset from face parameter that controls how far off the back of the emitter & the pole goes from the face. I control the up/down rotation of the emitter here also. It all looks like it attaches to the face and flex's just fine, minus some rotation issues (planes overlapping and automatically locking to one another I believe). All inside the family editor mind you. Most importantly the pole is attached to the face and flexes well in that direction.

So when I insert the family into a project and on a wall it will be like it sees the wall 'offset' from its actual location by feet. Basically the pole is no longer on 'physically' attached to the wall. If I then change the family to another family the new family (let's say and electrical outlet) will then look like it is attached to the wall correctly...

    -What I think is happening...

I've heard people say that they seemed to rotate things in Revit and it will 'throw' them off somewhere. basically Revit doesn't always like to rotate things at times so it just decides it need to be 500 feet away. I think something like this is happening to me, which I'm going to say is a hard coded bug, because after I've inserted the family into the project on a wall, I've started deleting one thing at a time in the family and reloading the family into the project and it is still feet off the wall. Mind you it rotates fine in the family editor and flexes fine in the family editor so this is why I'm thinking bug...

I know this is not very helpful for someone to help fix, but it's been killing me for a while now.. And I know it would probably be a ton of help to upload the family, but it would seem I can't for some reason. Personally I haven't been able to upload any family since the new site, but I don't know what is going wrong.... I might be able to upload to another site and provide a link to it, but I'll have to think on this over the weekend...

Default Re: Family Offset from Wall Problem...

    I fixed it....

The answer is.... I don't know what was broke....

But I rebuilt it twice from scratch. The first one still broke... The second rebuild, I pulled the item into the project under a new name and for every little thing I redefined it in the project to see if I could catch what went wrong. And it just happened to work all the way to be fully rebuilt this time...

I think something corrupted the original item when I pulled the item into the project and every time I redefined it I just kept that funny random quark... thing... I'll never know, but if you want to see the broken one I can shoot you an e-mail with it or just try and post it else ware and give a link....
