Default Upgrade from Revit 2012 to Revit 13: File management & Customization

    Hi all,

I've just upgrade from Revit 2012 to Revit 2013. I'm fairly new to Revit and this is my first time upgrading. I was just wondering if there is an easy way to deal with file management and customization.

I assume I should now be working with the new contents package that comes with 2013, but what about all my custom families I was using in 2012? Do I need to go through and look for all my lookup tables and move them to the new 2013 folder. What do I do about my custom templates? all the Families in there will now need to be updated. Would it make more sense to just make an entirely new template now? Or this there an easier way to deal with all these problems?

Would you guys recommend me deleting all of the 2012 content to reduce the chances of using the wrong files or should I keep them in a different location?

    Thanks in advance!

We keep a company library with all of our custom families....the OOTB Library are set to Read Only so they cannot be modified.

If you still have projects working in 2012, I would not upgrade your custom families. We tend to not upgrade them at all since Revit can open past releases, but cannot open future releases. Most of the time there are new options with the newer release and I tend to build a new family instead of upgrading the older one. Also we keep all of our OOTB libraries for 3 releases, since that is how many our subscription will allow us to use.

Thanks for the reply. This helps a lot. So now my question is; If I use an older family, where will it look for my lookup tables? It will just look for it in whichever folder is set up in 2013, correct? This means all I really need to do is ensure I have the look up tables for my custom families in this new lookup folder for Revit 2013?
