I'm looking for a way to sub-total SF numbers in an area schedule - existing and new construction. Can't find a way to use phasing. Any other ideas?

You will need a separate schedule for each phase. Schedules are phase dependent. Select the schedule, go to View Properties, select the phase, (re) name the schedule.
To combine areas from different phases in one schedule, export to a spread sheet, format and import back as text or a jpg.
