Thread: How do you create Dynamic Annotation?

Default How do you create Dynamic Annotation?

How do you make a DynamicAnnotation? For example, if there is 2 receptacles that are stacked on each other an elevation view. When you are placing the receptacle on the wall, how can you make it so that it doesn't just duplicate the annotation on the same place on the floor plan? Additionally, how do you make it so that if the receptacles that are places near each other that the annotation is spaced away from each other? Also with scaling, how can this work seamlessly without stacking or overlapping on each other?

You can't. Annotation Symbols embedded in two instances will not recognize each other. Revit does not detect if two symbol are too close and contacting/overlapping each other. A [not-so-good] work-around would be to hide one of the elements and then place an instance of the Annotation Symbol in the correct location. In order to accomplish showing two stacked or side-by-side devices properly, you could make a single Annotation Symbol (embedded in one of the Families) to graphically represent this.

To add to this, I've actually added a "Nudge" parameter to some of my Families (which is built into the Generic Annotation) that allows the position of the Annotation to be shifted. This is not ideal, but I also built in a maximum value (via formulas) so that a user could not make it too far off the base point.

Because of this, we've used tags w the annotation symbol embedded. This allows us to move the tag where ever we please and if the 3D element gets deleted or moved, the tag goes w it in addition it allows us to tag it in section views & 3D views.

    See video for sample:

Just add lines inside your tag family.

The primary hangup to that method is that you have to Tag every element in every View (except dependents), creating the potential to miss elements. This seems like it could be kind of risky, even with liberal use of the 'Tag All' tool. Have you had a problem with elements being missed and going 'untagged'?

Correct, unfortunately that is the primary hangup to this method. For Electrical, by default we leave the annotative symbol on and recommend to tag only when needed, like in Mat's case.
For Mechanical, like T-Stats since the Mech Equipment category can't natively have Annotative Symbols embedded in the family, we use the Tag method all the time. So far we haven't had any problems w/ it (knock on wood).

Well, the attached family (Revit 2012) has an embedded Annotation, is of the Mechanical Equipment Category, and should be able to host to a Vertical Face. Give it a shot in a Project with a Link. (This is just a crude example family...)
