3D PDF creation now available

Here is a link I found for creating 3D PDF files.
The 3D file format "U3D" is required to embed the 3D models in a PDF document.

PS: I'm not so impressed with the new 3D PDF compared to Auodesk's 3D DWF.
The files seem to be very choppy and not as smooth as 3D DWF files.
I haven't tried it out yet and would like to see if you guys have any luck creating them with Revit.
So please upload some samples for the group to see.

Thanks for posting this. This is going to be a great thread. I'll check it out when time allows and get back to you. Hopefully, some of the other, more technically savvy forum members, can jump in with their typically awsome analytical abilities and break this down.

I think PDF will eventually overtake the DWF, riding on its strength as a free (at least on the receivers' end) and universally-known and flexible format.

Hi,

Let me clarify how the "3D PDF" files were created on http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/cis2.html On that web page, under the heading "New" at the top to the right, there is a link that will take you to the "3D PDF" files. To see the files you need to have the latest version of Adobe Reader 7.0 installed.

Here is the process that was used to create the "3D PDF" files.

1 - Convert a VRML model or any other 3D file format to U3D format with Deep Exploration from Right Hemisphere (http://www.righthemisphere.com/). The U3D format was developed by the 3D Industry Forum (http://www.3dif.org/). The format was essentially developed by Intel.
2 - Embed the U3D file in an existing PDF file with Adobe Professional (http://www.adobe.com/).

The new version of Adobe Reader incorporates a 3D viewer from Right Hemisphere that works with U3D files.

That Bentley link is REALLY impressive. Gotta look into the megabite resources involved. I'm getting Acrobat 7.0, so I'll be testing this stuff & will report to you guys, later this month most likely.

FYI, the Right Hemishere software costs $150 (on top of the cost of Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is pretty darn expensive, if bought separately from Adobe Creative Suite Premium).

Yes quite expensive indeed. I can create 3D DWF files as part of the subscription for ADT. That is a big bonus from Autodesk.

The 3D PDF files just jump around so much in my viewer they are hard to view properly. Does this happen to you also or is only happening to me?

I'm not there yet and don't expect to be experimenting for a few weeks. Will advise when I can.

Yeah Bentley seems to be on top of the 3D PDF concept. Here is a link that shows Revit to 3d pdf via Bentley plug-in
