Civil 3D 2012

I am new to Civil 3D and am trying to do a water drop analysis. I am not prompted to select a surface (as the tutorial suggests), but I get the message:

Command: CREATEFLOWPATHFROMSURFACE
There are no Catchments in this drawing

Must I create a catchment prior to Creating a Flow Path from Surface- or is there some setting that I must toggle?
