Problems plotting elevation views with shadows to pdf

I'm hitting a snag when trying to print an exterior elevation view on which I have shadows turned on. I'm using pdf factory pro as my pdf plotter.

When I plot (or even preview the plot), the entire elevation (linework and shadows) is grayed out and is far too light. I've gone into the print settings and have selected raster image but the result is still the same. It's also the same whether I select black lines or gray shades in the settings dialog box.

When I turn off the shadows in elevation, it prints fine.

Does anyone know if this is a Revit setting that I don't have adjusted correctly or is it a problem with my pdf program?

It sounds like a .pdf problem to me. Perhaps you should download cutePDF (http://www.cutepdf.com) and see if that helps?

I thought it might be a .pdf problem as well, however after trying cutepdf and pdf factory pro, the same problem keeps occurring.
Not sure what to do next.....
