Detail cuts

I am drawing panel elevations to show reinforcing in and I need to cut a detail thru a panel leg looking down. For the life of me I can't get Revit to do it. Not a new detail or as a referenced detail. Does anyone know how to get Revit to do this or how to at least work around it? I included a snapshot to help show what I mean.panel leg section.JPG

Are you using the "Section" or "Callout" button on the View tab? I just tried both in an interior elevation and the "Callout" button created a parallel view, but the "Section" button created a cut view looking down. Before I made the cut, I switched to the "Detail View" type in the properties palette (In lieu of Building or Wall Section), which gave me a detail cut type callout, rather than the rectangular callout from the "Callout" button.
