Default suggestions for updated job title

Now I really do wish was a forum for career advice...

I’m having a sort of dilemma forming at my job. It has to do with my position and my title. This company is a transportation consulting company; our bread-and-butter specialty has been automated people-movers (those tram trains at bigger airports than go from terminal to terminal). I’ve been with this company for over twelve years. I hired on as a CAD tech – the title I have had is ‘CAD Specialist’. While there are a few engineers who ‘know CAD’, I’m the closest thing the company has to a real, full-time CAD department.

Most of my CAD work has ranges from simple ‘crayon’ conceptual graphics to very technical reference drawings in Civil 3D. The latter are usually plan and profile drawing sets of a train alignment with details – just short of full-blown design drawings.

However, I do a lot more than just CAD monkey work. My education is in construction and I’ve had some experience in that. Here, I’ve been involved with on-site in-the-field observation and supervising testing, inspection and demonstrations, traveling for the company in this. One thing that this company does is represent the client in this – sort of eyes and ears on the construction site. I’ve done some low-level schedule preparation and some engineering-type analysis. In short, yesterday I may have been reviewing standards and specifications, today I may be drawing some serious models, tomorrow I may be flying to another jobsite with my hardhat and boots.

I suggested that we upgrade my title, and everyone concerned agrees. Now we simply want to come up with the actual verbiage. ‘Senior Designer’, ‘Transportation Specialist’, and ‘Senior Transportation Design Specialist’ have each been suggested. I’m still mulling these over, and trying to think of better wording.

I know: I'm rambling a little, and ranting a little...

    Any ideas and/or opinions?

    TIA

Designer is always a good, generic title.
You can hide a multitude of sins, expertise, and qualifications inside that single word. (senior just makes me sound old.... & there ain't no need to rub it in!)

Depending on the state, the engineer / architect title may be restricted. I would suggest the 'specialist' name as an alternative to Bill's suggestion.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

I'd have to agree with Senior Transportation Design Specialist, or Senior Transportation Designer/Field Consultant, Senior Designer/Field Supervisor.
    Th t's my 2 Cents...

if it's too verbose it might end up sounding a little 'fuel injection technician' or somesuch, so I'd go for something shorter like the senior designer or transportation specialist route....also the less unusual it is the better if you end up looking for a new job somewhere, they'll just see something they recognise on yer CV...I think I'd go with Senior Designeror maybe Senior Designer (Transportation) if you want to indicate more what you do or the department yer working in

Lead Cad Monkey.. A.k.a. The Silverback Cad Monkey...
Give a man AutoCad, and he'll draw you a floor plan.
Give a man Revit and he'll build you a house.
Give Cadmama a couple of drinks and she'll have everyone singing Rockytop!

Ah, so many of us have these ADD-friendly jobs. I get lots of letters about the salary survey because of it. It's nice they're giving you leeway and letting you have some input. I've been wanting mine changed for years (CADD Coordinator is a pretty small part of my current duties).

For yours, I would suggest "Systems Specialist." Software people will think you specialize in software, and others will view it as a specialist in the systems you install, etc.

I'd plug some of these suggestions into a job search engine like Indeed, and see what comes back.
It sorta goes without saying that checking Indeed.com/Salary could be fun, too.
