Default Help to Reduce Large Drawing Size

    Hello AUGI Members,

We are having a problem with AutoCAD drawings received from a consultant. No matter what I try to reduce the file size I can only get it down to 6.5mb. I even deleted all of the elements on the drawing and the file was still over 6.1mb. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations to help resolve this problem. I would upload a sample drawing but the file size exceeds the forum limitations.

    Thank you for any assistance....!

    Regards,
    Vince

Could you share what you've tried, so we're not telling you to repeat actions that have already not worked?

My question would be, have you tried to use WBLOCK to export all of the entities to a new drawing file?

    Thank you Melanie,

I have done the following actions to the drawings:

    - Purged
    - Audit
    - Lisp routine that deletes unnamed blocks starting with *U, *D and *A
    - Deleted layer filters
    - Lisp routine to remove $0$ from the layer names
    - Copy/clip and or -Wblock to clean file

I even deleted all visiable objects on the drawing and did all of the above but the file size remains at 6.1mb.

    Regards,
    Vince

Ouch, sounds like you're needing to look at the more obscure stuff. The only one I can think of off hand is wipeouts; try a quick select, select all wipeouts, see if that shows anything. Once ran into this when a drawing had background masks for the main dimension style and they all got exploded (grumble grumble some people need to stay the h*** away from CAD...).

Is there anything specific about this drawing that you need to keep in the original drawing? Why not wblock out the elements you need into a new drawing?
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.

Look at the OP's follow up, seems he's already tried that.

Perhaps some 3rd party proxy element or something... dunno...

Massive quantities of annotation scales and/or empty groups? How about block references with nothing but invisible attributes? Large amounts of data (not graphical elements) attached at the drawing level?

But was the clean file the same size?

Can you attach a partial drawing here, if this is possible, then we can have a look?

Does that include stuff like zero length entities, empty strings and (most importantly) Registered Apps? I.e. did you run the command-line purge by prefixing the command with a minus sign:
    Code:
    Command: -PURGE
Enter type of unused objects to purge [Blocks/DEtailviewstyles/Dimstyles/Groups/LAyers/LTypes/MAterials/MUltileaderstyles/Plotstyles/SHapes/textSTyles/Mlinestyles/SEctionviewstyles/Tablestyles/Visualstyles/Regapps/Zero-length geometry/Empty text objects/All]: R
Otherwise there might be some custom dictionaries added to the file. You could try finding these through my old DictEdit routine: http://sourceforge.net/p/caddons/cod...l/DictEdit.lsp
