Question Cannot Open, Created with a newer Version

    Command: i INSERT
** File \\(FILE NAME AND LOCATION) was created by an incompatible version of AutoCAD
    *Invalid*
How can this happen when I am the one that created it with the same version that I attempting to open it with?

    Please advise! Thank you.

The file you are inserting may be corrupt. Try opening that file and recover,a udit, purge etc. and rename.

Or, someone else opened and saved the drawing?

Ok, this is getting frustraing, Can someone who has had this same issue please advise what is going on. I cannot open any dwg files that I just created yesterday. ACADm2012, continues to give "Incompatible Version" warning. When I attempt to recover said file as suggested above, ACAD Crashes with a FATAL ERROR. Please advise.

Do you have any BAK files available?

Have you tried to INSERT the drawings you created yesterday into a blank unsaved drawing? Does this cause a crash too?

These files will not open in a new blank file. Get same "incompatible Version" message. The crashes occur when I attempt recover.

A few other options to try.

1.If you have any BAK files you can back up the drawing that way to the time that the BAK file was last saved. Depending on when that was it might fix the problem or it still might be corrupt. In your project folder, locate any of the BAK files. I would copy them and paste them into a temporary folder. Then, change the BAK to DWG. This will create a CAD drawing from the BAK file. Open that up and see whats going.

    2. Does anyone in the office have a version of 2013? If so, have them open the drawing and clean it out. Once done make sure they save the drawing file back to 2010 version.

    Thanks for the info.

No one has 2013. We get our ACAD from our network so we are all on the same page.

I do understand the BAK process and did not have to do it. I did the work around suggested on the warning to convert to 2010 using True View. This is issue is still not resovled as this may happen again. Someone from AutoDesk should take this bull by the horns and tame it for the rest of the world. Afterall, these seats are not given away.

    two things to check...

    1. Open a blank file, save it and see if it does it again.

    2. Make sure all Service Packs are installed, there was a 2012 "bug" just don't remember which patch fixed it.

Also, can you open these files that won't open with DWG Trueview?

If this is a true 2010 DWG file (check the first 6 bytes by opening the file in Notepad, it should be "AC1024"), then the DWG must be corrupt.
Do you do a daily backup of your files? The most you should lose would be one day in that case. Less if any of the BAK or autosave BAK files are good.
