Default breaking Revit objects apart, (separating), in 3dsMax

I'm confused about how to edit revit objects in 3dsMax.
How do I separate objects to make them individual objects? In other words, when I try to select the roof, I get ALL objects that are "dimensional lumber" i.e. I joists, roof, fascia, etc.
I tried selecting a roof polygon and making a copy and editing it but still when I apply materials to this polygon they apply to all of the dimensional lumber.
Probably because I made a copy as a clone but it didn't give me the "copy" option.

    two ways:
    1) export each as a seperate part and bring them in one at a time. ha! (on something small I've done that, don't laugh!)
    2) when you link your revit model directly in, there is an option for "by materials" "by objects" "do not combine", etc... choose do not combine from the pulldown menu.

2b) this is under the impression that you are not exporting/importing an fbx file but are directly linking the revit model using the "references" option.

    Thanks RB.
I see you are a visualization instructor. Curious to know what you're offering.
Do you have a site I can look at?
    Thanks

Its currently under progress but yes my site is available here

Depending on what you need help on, I can probably provide some guidance. Unfortunately I'm pretty booked up through mid-August. I'll be presenting at this year's CSRW in Omaha, NE.
