SetPathType xref relative pathing

Is there a way to set user settings to have a default of 'relative' pathing instead of full when inserting xref's?

Maybe a lisp that runs when opening a drawing.

It's been a while, but I did review the above post and I couldn't get the lisp to work for me. In AutoCAD 2004, wasn't the pathing set to relative? Now it's full pathing again? In order to use the features of the s.s.m. (such as create drawing list), I've found it best to create sheet sets for each stage of construction as opposed to trying to manage all phases in one sheet set. Since the sheet list created contains ALL sheets in the sheet set, this is the only way. When our project goes from Approval to Working Drawings, we copy the files from one folder to another. If the paths are relative I see this as being fairly easy to manage in the s.s.m. as well.

Has anyone implemented a solution?

I don't think you can do what you are asking. Take a look at this clip from AutoCAD help.

Path Type

Specifies whether the saved path to the xref is the full path, a relative path, or no path. You must save the current drawing before you can set the path type to Relative Path. For a nested xref, a relative path always references the location of its immediate host and not necessarily the currently open drawing.

The Relative Path option is not available if the referenced drawing is located on a different local disk drive or on a network server.


However, this may be a good work around.

Take a look at Reference Manager, Start menu (Windows): Programs, Autodesk, AutoCAD, Reference Manager. I think it may help you and it runs independent of AutoCAD so you can modify multiple files at the same time.

Try these formats for relative and partial relative paths.
