Recently, we were able to use the IFC file format as a sort of workaround to Revit version compatibility issues. After working on a project for quite a while in Revit 2012 (which was the current version when the project started, seemingly an ice age ago). We received a foundation/shoring model from the GC in Revit 2013, and wanted to link it into our design model. Rather than upgrade our model to Revit 2013, we exported the shoring model as an IFC file, which we could then import into the Revit 2012 design model. There was a loss of data in the process, but this was more of a geometry check than anything else, so the workaround was fairly useful.
