Default Default block insert and save location

I've tried setting support file paths and every setvar and option I know of or can find and I still cannot get the default to set for inserting blocks and saving the current drawing. Saves always go to something called D:\Data unless I type the full path and blocks simply aren't found unless I type in the whole path to them. My last version was 2008 and I have always been able to set things up to default to the C: drive all the way back to the DOS days. My AutoCAD IS guy can't help. He tried and was stumped. The only thing he said was that I don't have enough RAM to run 2012 properly. Unfortunately, it may be some time before I can get another box. Any ideas? Thanks for your consideration.

By blocks I am assuming the block name is the name of a dwg file you are inserting??? In that the drawings have to be in a folder that Autocad looks it (a support directory). I fyou go to options under files, you cad add a specific support folder where your blocks redide and then autocad will find them.

Check out the following for the folder settings:

    System Variable: REMEMBERFOLDERS

Thanks. The problem is that when I set the path in the support folder it still does not find them. It always looks in D:\Data no matter what. I've also tried rebooting AutoCAD and the whole computer. I have rememberfolders set to 0.

This sounds like customization. Are you using the OOTB INSERT command, or another tool/redefined INSERT command? Do you have a third-party plug-in running, like Vault?

Just using the plain insert command. No third party stuff running. It might be that I'm being constrained by some network setting beyond my control, at least that's my fear. This never happened before in any previous version. I can live with it, but it's just one more thing slowing me down.

Workaround: The "Select File" dialog box is the same for Open, Insert, etc… Drag any folder you go to all the time to the left and drop it where History & Favorites are. Now you can access that folder with a simple click any time. I have my Blocks & Tutorials folders in there.

at command prompt type OP <enter>
    select files tab
    select Support file search path
pick add, then browse. find the directory for the blocks and click one
next move that directory towards top
    then click apply
    close down the option box

this should solve part of your problem
