First, open and detach from central.

Then I start by removing any unnecessary links, and make sure that any I need to remain are pathed correctly for our local file structure. Then I create a default 3D view, and delete all other views in the model. I also delete all schedules, legends, sheets, and panel schedules (if any). I usually change the view and sheet filters rules to be blank to make selecting and deleting them quicker. Then purge the model several times until the items to purge reads 0. Finally, save to whatever file we're using in our local file structure and it's ready to go.

If you are using the architect's views in your model (the "By Linked View" option) as a background then skip deleting the views step above.

Case makes an add-on specifically for linked file cleanup, it's pretty slick. It won't delete the view that you're in, and you still have to Purge Unused afterwards, but it saves a bunch of time manually clicking everything to delete.

I also before deleting sheets create a .pdf (unless you've been supplied one) of all the sheets & share with your team.

Good tip on creating a default 3D view & deleting the rest of the views.
