Unhappy 3ds max design 2014- keyframe slider problem

Hi all! I'm new to max, and I am trying to animate a car along a path for an architectural visualization. I have gone through many basic animation tutorials. I can't for the life of me get the object to move smoothly along the path. For starters, I've noticed in every tutorial I watch, the keyframe slider moves frame to frame smoothly when dragging it (with or without any animation attached to it). Mine does not at all! when I drag it, it hops randomly from random frame to frame with huge gaps in between. When I set up auto key frames and apply "follow", the keys are really unevenly spaced and range from skinny to fat. I'm at a complete loss of what to do and have a deadline fast approaching. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

Difficult to know exactly what the issue is but maybe something like this will help?
