Default Exporting to an older version of C3D makes the file HUGE

I am trying to export a drawing to the 2010 version of Civil 3D, and it goes from a 4 MB file to a 48MB file. WHATS THE POINT OF THAT?!!! I need to get this drawing to a client, and it is too big to send as an attachment. Any suggestions would be great.

Are you using Export to DWG, 2010 format (command name: "AECEXPORTTOAUTOCAD2010")?

If so, that explodes all of the AEC objects down to native AutoCAD entities, which almost always increases the size of the drawing.
Annotative objects are multiplied in the drawing due to duplication if SAFEFIDELITY = 1

    Have you purged the drawing?
    Have you purged the regapps?
Have you deleted all unneeded scale list entries?
Make sure the drawing doesn't contain the DGN linetype garbage that seems to be floating around.
