Default coordinates for areas within a title block

We received some drawings from our client. Their title block includes 'coordinates' along the top and bottom edges of the title block (letters from A to F) and numbers up the sides (from 1 to 8 ). One of our engineers wants to know the correct way to reference these coordinates, either letter first, then number (A1), or vice versa (1A). Any advice?

I would do it the same way one reads, over and then down.

not sure if 'correct' means aything here, as long as the two directions (across and down) are referenced unambiguously, the A1 = 1A

A1 still seems better IMHO, and at least there's a rationale for doing it that way!

And, for what its' worth that's the same way Excel handles row and column nomenclature by default

Agreed, across then up/down has always been the way IME.

I agree, no matter which direction the numbers or letters are.
Per NCS (national cad standards) and Nafvac and most other standards based on NCS, letters going up and numbers going across.
And per NCS UDS-02.8, they reference them A1, B3, etc (see image)

Navfac title blocks have (starting at the lower left corner)1 through 5 horizontally, and A through D vertically.
And we use A1, C3 etc for those as well.
