Question error "drawing file is not valid"

I had a system crash from a virus and performed a recovery using "system restore" from the day before the crash.

Now when I try to open a drawing (AutoCAD 2012)the error message "drawing file is not valid" appears. I have tried recovering the .dwg and .bak files with no luck. It seems most of my files are corrupted in some way.

When I click on a dwg file to open it no preview is available.

I can open .dwg files from my hard drive that I had zipped through eTransmit command.

If go out to our server (remote) and copy in a previous file that I worked on it will open.

    Has anyone encountered this problem?

That file looks as though it's totally hosed. It should start out (in an ascii editor with "AC####' where the #### indicate what version the file is. --- That's not there anymore. Whatever you had infesting your pc apparently trashed a lot of things.

System Restore is not a backup tool -- just restores system OS files, so everything _else_ on the PC is potentially non-functional.

Definitely time to look into a reliable local backup system if your server is remote. Remember, there are only two kinds of people in the world, those who have had hard drive crashes, and those who will. Applies to virus and other disasters too. No one is invulnerable.
