Unhappy Any way to specify the nested type in a Type Catalogue?

I'm trying to find a way to specify which nested type is used in a Type Catalogue - is this possible? I can't make it work... this means that this family either can't use a type catalogue or whenever it is loaded all types get the same nested type... seems to be the one which was last in use in the family editor...

    Ideas?

    Hello Duncan,

You need to have in the type catalog the Family Type Parameter called out as ParameterName##other## and use a ':' as a separator. See my example below. These have to match the nested family exactly, or it will break. You also need to have all the types of the nested family either in the parent family or in the project.

    Hope this helps,
    Jeff S.

    Panel 1 Type##other##"
    F-Z-Door Panel-D1 : D1 2-10x6-8"

I think it was best described in the 2009 User Help file. Since then, it has been hard to find information on. You can always export out a type catalog from the Family Editor. Let us know how it works out for you.

    Best of luck,
    Jeff S.

So let me jump in here with a question.
I have two nested families with at least four types of table top types. I want my family to let me pick which one it uses in a visibility parameter. I can make a parameter that lets me assign which nested "Family type" is selected. I just don't get how to make that the one that is visible. What am I missing here?

You haven't assigned the table top a 'label' aka your Family Type Parameter. See under the instance properties of the table top and down to the group 'Other > Label' that's where you need to assign the Label 'Table Top' to your table top.

An important tip for getting this to work is that the nested type you have selected in the active type must match the one currently selected in the family. Otherwise assigning the label won't work. Try the attached family where I have done the two things I've described.

This is though a completely different issue from the original question which is how to specify the nested type so users *can't* change it as an instance parameter.

So there is a little trick that I used for our door families. I made the panels Shared & loaded them into our Firm Template. The Door Families (frames w/nested panels) has only one panel in it. The Type Catalog for the Door Families specify the nested panel, and it literally pull in the right one from the project. It's like a picking up an online order at the store, everything is waiting for you. You just need to show up and pick it up/pay for it.

    Cheers,
    Jeff S.

Finally I found time to get this working with Type Catalogues defining the Types used. No stress once you know how.

    Thanks Jeff

I may be able to get back on this later today. I have been doing some training here where I am contracting and am now trying fix a few families based on feedback from the training.
I will let you know what I end up doing.

I ended up with no types in the table tops just visibility parameters and set them to equal type visibility parameters once nested. Easy enough and then I did not have to worry about all the other nested specialty equip pieces. It is working. Now I just have to get the rest of the visibility settings for what they want. This Ts basically the legs and undertable and wheels.
Then I can get my catalog running. I am SO on the downhill slide on this one!
