Post Open or link drawing file in part file.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I have been using Inventor 2009 for the past 3 years thru the school of hard knocks. After failing to open a customer file I have finally convinced my company to invest in inventor 2014 and a new workstation. I will be receiving in the next week.

    My question:
I like the current ability to open parts from a drawing (idw). Is there some way to do the reverse? Open the drawing I created from the part (ipt) side. Maybe this is addressed in 2014? Please any solutions would need to work in 2014 also.

    Thanks in advance!

If a drawing has been created with the same name as the part/assembly, RMB on the name at the top of the browser and select "Open Drawing".

    When in doubt, right-click...

Thanks Bunny for the reply. Is this a feature in Inv2014? I'm not getting that option in Inv2009.

I use 2014. Not sure how far back this option has been available, though.

Thanks again Bunny! I quess I will have to wait for my new Inv2014 system. One other question. Does the drawing need to be in the same folder as the part/assembly file or located in a folder somewhere within the project?

    You're welcome.

    Within the project, typically.

My experience with this feature is that it does no searching whatsoever. Upon right-clicking the name in the browser, I select "Open drawing", and a dialog window opens, asking me to search for the drawing myself.
Big fat lot of help that is
A solid naming system is always a good thing.

    Thanks Pierre for your input.

It would be nice to be able to add resources to your parts/assembly files. Like the dwg's for fabrication and laser cutting that would go with the part or any other documents, cut-sheets, etc. How hard would it be to add these links to the browser? Inventor is a link based system, seem to me to be a no brainer.

I agree a solid naming and filing system is always a good practice. However it doesn’t help me to remember if I even made the dwg to begin with. One thing I have started doing is to create a note on the part stating that I created a drawing. This has been helpful. The note follows the part and is visual.

In my experience, as long as the drawing name (idw's... I do not use the dwg format) matches the part/assembly, Inventor usually finds it.

We had to add a section to our title blocks to show if a part has a laser cutting profile.
