Default Inserting Links and Importing CAD Formats

    Greetings Programs,
When I insert links into Revit or import grids from CAD format, I get this option for positioning. Origin to origin or center to center. It seems to default to center to center but my concern is that the center might be different for each drawing and I need to make sure that what I am importing will be precisely where it should be as far as the coordinates are concerned. What would be the best setting out of these two? Or does it matter? I would think the origin option would be the most important but then why isn't it the default?

Default Re: Inserting Links and Importing CAD Formats

Revit uses Auto - Center to Center as the default because of the completely unreliable way people create DWG files. Revit doesn't want us to place geometry far from the origin of the project. If the geometry in the DWG is very far from its own origin and Auto - Origin to Origin is used the DWG ends up quite far away from Revit's own origin. Far enough away and it starts to affect Revit's graphic display of information. If the DWG file's elements are too far Revit will end up ignoring the Auto - Origin to Origin selection and use Auto - Center to Center instead anyway.

Shorter answer: If you know the DWG file's elements are close to its origin, and all the related DWG files you might also want to import, use the same origin; then use Auto - Origin to Origin.

Remember, you'll have to make sure you choose the option each time you import because Revit is hard wired to Auto - Center to Center.
