    Default Spec'ing a new laptop

My employer made mention of getting me a new laptop. I don't want to come back and ask them to buy me a $2000 beast, but I do want specs that are gonna stand up for a while and not be gasping for air trying to keep up with subsequent versions of acad. Needs to handle 3D modeling and all without breaking a sweat. Looking at lenovo, toshiba, and asus primarily. Any suggestions? Anybody bought something recently that worked well or horribly for them? Thanks in advance.

3D modeling without breaking a sweat *will* be in the $2000 range. Maybe a bit less, really depends on which 3D software(s) you are working with and what features you are using.

Based on your requirement, we would recommend the following:
    Dell Precision M6800 Notebook Workstation (8GB) £1,970.00
    MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    Intel Core i7-4900MQ (2.8GHz, 4-core, 8MB) Processor
    8GB DDR3L Memory (1600MHz, 2x4GB)
NVIDIA Quadro K3100M 4GB Graphics Card
    17.3" FHD (1920x1080) Ultrasharp LED-backlit Anti-Glare LCD Panel
750GB 7,200rpm SATA Hard Disk Drive
    8x DVD+/-RW Drive
    Integrated Bezel Camera & Microphone
    Dell 1550 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0
Microsoft Office 2013 Trial (trial license only)
    3-year Next Business Day Warranty

This has been tried and tested with the 2015 software and implemented within hundreds of UK practices.

Reviving an old thread. But what did you end up with. I'm curious because our company may be looking for a new laptop as well. We currently have a 3 year old Alienware which is nice, but running 2015 and beyond on it may prove the machine to become a data entry or low level design machine. Sad to see such a sweet machine be used for something it was never intended.
