    Default Scrolling with a cursor

Sometimes when I'm working close in I want to drag a window acrosss or up in the drawing. There are scroll buttons across the bottom and down one side. But is there a way to drag up or across and have the image scroll automatically?

I just tried in 2014 and it did move automatically, just fine in all directions. (out of the box settings here, just like my users have, to keep it simple for me support-wise)

Is there a setting or variable which controls this function?

It should work just by pressing and dragging with the middle mouse button [versions up to and including 2013, anyway.]

p.s. once you start working this way it makes sense to switch off the scroll-bars in options and free up some screen space.

Panning & zooming with the middle mouse button was a great addition to AutoCAD, but even before then I always had the scroll-bars switched off. Didn't like my screen moving without me telling it where to go. I prefered using zoom dynamic or even aerial view rather than sacrifice the screen for scroll-bars.
