Schedule length of a Line Based family

I've long been puzzled that the line based family template shipped with Revit does not report the length parameter in a schedule in the project environment. So I want to modify the not-line-based family template with my own shared length parameter. But I've never heard or read about this so I just want to check ... is there a downside to doing this?

I've made my own Line-based template based on the generic model template. Seems to work fine.
