When I made a move to Win7 it was one of the first utilities I sought out. MS really hobbled search in regards to finding file content.
GrepWin also has a portable executable, which meets OP request.

FWIW -
AstroGrep (4.5/19) is more highly rated than GrepWin (3.9/7); I haven't tried either personally.

Don't get me started on Windows search.
(a) I've had it not return any results, when I'm sitting there looking at the result in another window.
(b) I've started a search for a file that I know exists, and then went poking around in another window and found it manually long before I gave up waiting on Win Search...
As for finding strings inside of files, FINDSTR at the CMD prompt seems to do pretty good.
