Default zoom + regen = crash and corrupt file, but only on this pc???

    Hi there,

I'm using Acad 2010 full on windows 8(.1) for about half a year now, and the occasional crashes I always had seem to evolve in more frequent hickups and it's giving me headaches.

They ALWAYS happen the same way: when I'm at a close zoom range and the program (auto)regens, Autocad just freezes, so I have to force-exit. Problem is, I can't reopen the drawing because it freezes again, so my file is unusable. Luckily, I have friendly collegues around who can open it from their pc without any problem. They just have to zoom out, save and exit, and I'm back in business...

Could this be a graphic cards issue? We have 4 identical workstations here and I'm the only one experiencing this...

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions

All of the workstations involved are running AutoCAD 2010 on Win8.1?
It could be any number of things. One thing to try would be to create a new windows profile on that machine (log in as a different, new user) and see if the problem crops up.

I've never had a crash on Windows 7 so I'd be concered if getting crashes on Windows 8.
Of course, Acad 2012 was designed for Windows 7 but I wouldn't expect things to get worse.

Might also be a good idea to run some diagnostics on the RAM if it only borks on one PC (and all the others in the shop are the same make/model/etc)

    Interesting suggestions here...
Yes, all my collegues run exactly the same Acad and Windows version on the same hardware.
rkmcswain, I just switched pc with somebody and we each logged in with our own name. We did exactly the same actions that for sure would make Acad freeze. Mine crashed and my collegue's didn't experience any problems at all. So this is clearly a windows profile thingy.

It's time to send a message to the dark and eerie cellars of doom where the IT guy lives...

Thanks for the input people, I'll keep you posted!

    Hail to the IT department!
After testing and reinstalling the problem wasn't solved, until we unabled the hardware acceleration function through the _3dconfig command. This doesn't seem to affect other functions (I never use 3D in Autocad) but at least is solved my regen problem.
    Case closed!
