Tim, in my experience I would recommend first converting them to Feature Lines as the editing tools area great. You can convert existing objects to Feature Lines from the Home Tab, Feature Line, Create Feature Lines from Objects. Pick all of your 3D polylines, pick a style and if you want to erase your original objects or not. Then you can highlight all of the feature lines you just created, right-click and pick Add to Surface as Breakline. Another route would be to open up the definitions section of your surface in the Toolspace and you can right click on breaklines and add them that way.

If you choose not to convert them to Feature Lines, you can still add them to a surface as breaklines using the Toolspace method.

    Hope that helps!
